The mural that welcomes you to this home is more than a beautiful work of art—it's a gift to the neighborhood.
In December 2020, when Chaumont Path became one of the few places neighbors still crossed paths, the homeowners commissioned Oakland artist Daniel Velasquez (Funtime Dan) to create a mural that could bring beauty and connection to a space the community shared. After Daniel painted the entire design freehand, families from the neighborhood were invited to paint one of the lotus flowers together.
"The lotus came from our own tradition. It's one of the most sacred plants in the East: it blooms by pushing up through muddy water, and its petals emerge untouched. It submerges every night and opens again every morning. In 2020 that felt like exactly the right thing to put on a wall people walked past on their way through a hard year. Oakland has a deep public art culture. This was our family's contribution to it, through a cultural lens we brought with us."
Designed to blend seamlessly with the surrounding garden, the painted lotuses weave through the agave and aeonium below, creating one continuous work of art.
"We set out to improve a wall and ended up with something the street shares."
